Xerxes, the Proud Husband
Esther 1: 10-12 Xerxes was “proud” of his wife’s beauty but treated her like a piece of property. Xerxes shows us the exact opposite of loving our wives like Christ loves the Church. We will be challenged to honor, respect, and show off/brag on our spouses (and other relationships) in ways that are about them, for them, and not us.
A Soft Dad
2 Samuel 13: 20-21 (Use NRSV) Sometimes being a good husband means being a present and active father. We will learn from the story of David and his kids that there is an appropriate time to step in, punish, and be harsh. And we will explore the importance of being an active and present father.
Brother Abraham
Gensis 12: 10-13 Abraham was no knight in shining armor. He was more concerned with protecting himself than his wife. We will explore the issue of self protection/defensiveness in marriage. We will also more broadly see how God keeps his promises, even when we mess up.
